We have been helping with a stained glass panel of a nature scene that includes a beautifully detailed loon. So have you run into this kind of challenge? How to capture the gorgeous detail of a beautiful loon, without all of the cut lines and umpteen little, tiny pieces marring the flow of the panel? Our solution is to etch all of those little, little spots and dots that are the essence of the loon. Did I hear you ask: “What does that involve”?
Several steps – first, we had to create the artwork. Then we had to prepare a film tool, to use in making a thin photoresist, through a photographic process, We applied the photoresist, a kind of stencil, to the flashed/layered glass, then sandblasted the pieces. The flashed glass is black on white on clear, so we blasted away the black to reveal the white. Voila! Loon spots!

Where on earth can you find black on white flashed? I’ve not been able to find it from here in the midwest.
